My name is Capt Shelby Mccarthy, I am Sweetgrass Charters. I am a 35-year-old original Lowcountry Charlestonian. I grew up on the waterways, every weekend, going back-and-forth between the Wando River and the intercoastal waterways to Capers Island. As a young girl, I always dreamt of running my own boat and teaching other people the knowledge I've gained growing up on the water. I am a Registered Nurse serving our Lowcountry for the past 15 years. I have my masters in nursing, but the water always calls me home. Sweetgrass baskets stands lined Highway 17. Growing up, you would find men bring Sweetgrass home to their wives for baskets to be made in the evenings, this beautiful tradition. Sweetgrass can be found along our waterways very unique to the East Coast Marsh, or we call it the  Lowcountry. Salt water and Sweetgrass is what Sweetgrass Charters are made of. My first mate is Captain Capers, he is a 3 yr old standard poodle, always an option for him to join us!

About us

Female-led boating adventures

As an all female run crew, we bring a special touch to education on trailing, unloading and docking your boat, remember same team, we will have you, your family running smooth and seamless as a glassy harbor morning. We give you the confidence to do it all yourself. We believe Sweetgrass Charters will bring more people out to explore the waterways through education, while normalizing women on the water running their own boats. We can always use more girl boats!
